The academy and our story
From generation to generation, with love for the craft and respect for the grain.
The Amarant Academy Story
Amarant Academy is part of Royal Amarant Bakers, a family business with over 100 years of experience. We’re ready to keep baking delicious, affordable and healthy bread in a sustainable way for another 100 years. And we’d like to take you along for the ride with this unique program!
Developments in the baking profession are so rapid that training programs struggle to keep up. By drawing on our practical expertise and extensive network of professionals, our education will turn you into a genuine Next-Gen Baker.

1924
Amarant was founded in 1924 by Jan and Anna Pater. It started small with a self-built bakery in their farmhouse and a dog cart used to deliver the bread. After World War II, they baked traditional white bread for the whole village.

1955
Their son Cor takes over the bakery with his wife Tinie, introducing countless new developments: a new house with a new shop, the acquisition of the Hoorn Bread Factory, the renovation of the bakery in Avenhorn and partnerships with supermarkets and grocery stores.

1991
Johan and Marleen Pater are in charge. They acquire several bakeries throughout the Netherlands, set up partnerships with large supermarket chains and establish of Bake Five.

2024
In 2024, we celebrated our 100th anniversary and were awarded the designation “Royal,” becoming Royal Amarant Bakers. We now have four bakeries and about 450 employees led by the fourth generation of Paters.
